Red Line is a laboratory for waste interventions in fashion design. Working predominantly with industrial offcuts and machine shreds, we experiment with ancient and novel textile manipulations alongside reuse and remanufacture techniques to create new hand-worked garments. Each piece is limited or one-of-a-kind.

The 2R Wool Jacket is no ordinary outerwear. Made from recycled Australian wool and recycled PET, this fabric was first intended as a blanket but salvaged from a loom due to a weaving "error" and crafted into something just as cosy.
The lining is removable (and doubles as a shirt) so it can be washed separately, keeping the outfit fresh and the jacket out of the laundry. Each component has its own end of life pathway and replacement linings can be ordered if needed.

Red Line 2R Wool Jacket
Product Story

Make

Description

The 2R Wool Jacket is made entirely in-house at the A.BCH studio by our team of designers and tailors. While replacement linings can be purchased, the woollen outer-shell is one of a kind. We cut the pieces with zero waste, they are then constructed in-house by our tailors before being trimmed and pressed.

Fabric – Shell

Description

A blend of recycled wool (from shearing waste, factory floor waste + offcuts) and recycled PET. The material yarns were spun and woven at one of the last remaining weaving mills in Australia, located in Tasmania. Originally intended to be a blanket, this material was salvaged from a looming error and masterfully cut into a jacket.

Fabric – Lining

Description

Our blend of 50% Lenzing Tencel Luxe + 50% Lenzing Tencel makes this cellulose fabric silky and soft, with a gorgeous drape and light feel next to the skin. The material is commissioned by our "fabric composer", Mr. Mozart, who has spent the past 12 years building the most sustainable Tencel dye house and treatment centre possible. The yarns are brought in directly from Lenzing in Austria. The Tencel is spun in Wuxi and then woven with the un-spun Tencel Luxe in Suzhou where the looms can work with extremely fine filament fibres. It is finally brought back in-house to Mozartex where it is dyed using low impact dyes and treated wastewater.

Label

Description

100% recycled PET made in-house by a manufacturer with a passion for developing sustainable alternatives for brands. This is the only part of the garment that isn’t biodegradable. There's good news! In 2019 we developed a way to make these labels in organic cotton which feature in garments from A.31 onwards. Our Red Line pieces utilise earlier numbers so please remove before composting.

Care Label

Description

100% GOTS organic cotton. When we first started A.BCH in 2017, there were no organic cotton label options. In 2019, we were able to make the switch to digitally printed, 100% GOTS organic care labels which are now found on most of our garments.

End of Life

Recycling

To recycle this jacket, send it back to us for store credit. We'll even cover shipping! Depending on its condition, we'll repair & re-sell it (as second hand) OR transform it into brand new yarns (again) through our recycling program.

Compost

If returning is unlikely (you're busy with a climate rally or living off the grid), the jacket lining is fully compostable. Just remove the A.BCH tag from the inside back and cut the rest up into strips, safe for anaerobic composting at home or commercially.

The shell is a different story and requires mechanical recycling back at the mill where it all began.
