Description

The Quilted Life Preserver is an ode to quilting and patchwork as well as a commentary on waste. The piece features 100% GOTS organic linen panels that are hand stuffed from sewing machine waste to give the illusion of quilting into invisible panels and is lined in 100% deadstock Tencel Lyocell. This particular design method avoids further waste generation from the process. This vest is bound and finished with linen binding. As further commentary on the need for circular economy principles of separation into biological and technical materials, the removable harness is created from 100% polyester tape and PET buckle, which is reusable separately and easily detached for recycling.

Fabric

Description

Offcuts - GOTS Organic Linen (Quilted) Layer: 100% GOTS certified organic linen, grown in France by a group of farmers who have dedicated the last 10 years to perfecting the art of organic linen farming. Scutching is performed locally, fibres are then sent to Hungary to be spun into yarn. Finally, they are sent to Belgium, where they’re woven in a C02 neutral mill and whitened with GOTS certified low-impact oxygen bleach. Our Belgian supplier has been creating linen since 1864 and are recognised by The Masters of Linen.

Interior:  20% Recycled Cotton + 80% Cotton plain weave taffeta. The virgin cotton is grown in the USA, while the recycled content comes out of factory waste from Guatemala's denim mills. The two cottons are blended, spun and woven – they are completely undyed. We purchase and import the fabric directly from the mill in Guatemala who have been dedicated to creating beautiful undyed and recycled cottons since 1956.

Stuffing: Sewing machine offcuts, threads and shreds. A mixture of cellulosic materials.

Lining: Our blend of 50% Lenzing Tencel Luxe + 50% Lenzing Tencel makes this cellulose fabric silky and soft, with a gorgeous drape and light feel next to the skin. The material is commissioned by our "fabric composer", Mr. Mozart, who has spent the past 12 years building the most sustainable Tencel dye house and treatment centre possible. The yarns are brought in directly from Lenzing in Austria. The Tencel is spun in Wuxi and then woven with the un-spun Tencel Luxe in Suzhou where the looms can work with extremely fine filament fibres. It is finally brought back in-house to Mozartex where it is dyed using low impact dyes and treated wastewater.

Packaging

Compost

Our default packaging for local orders, home-compostable satchels have the lowest environmental impact when composted locally. Please don't throw this into your general waste bin, instead, after re-use, compost at home or find other solutions here. You can contact us immediately after placing your order to request recyclable packing instead.

Recycled

For extra fragile goods, or international orders, we use 100% post-consumer waste recycled and RECYCLABLE satchels, boxes and tissue paper. After re-use, these can go into your curb-side paper recycling bin.

Care

Laundering

Organic fibres need just a little more TLC than conventional ones. Spot/Hand wash in COLD water using a laundry bar or gentle eco-friendly detergents (check that there is no added bleach in your laundry detergents as these may discolour the piece). Do not machine wash. Lay flat to dry. Do not tumble dry or dry-clean. We'll send a detailed digital care guide when you buy this piece.

Repairs

We stand by our garments + offer complimentary repairs for all A.BCH pieces. Our free repairs are for general wear and tear, all we ask is that you cover the cost of delivery or drop off to our Melbourne studio and that you launder your piece prior to drop off. Re-making or alterations can also be requested + will be individually quoted based on the time required.

End of Life

Recirculate

Help extend the life of A.QLP by sending or dropping it back to us for store credit – we'll even cover the shipping. Depending on its condition, we'll repair & re-sell it (as second hand), remake it into something or if it's no longer useful, we'll transform it into brand new yarns through our Recycling Program (so circular, darling).

Recycle

The A.QLP was specifically designed for easy mechanical or cellulose chemical recycling. Send or drop it back to us for store credit, we'll even pay for shipping. Once received and assessed, the piece is washed and prepared for mechanical recycling. The yarns we create from this process will become feedstock for future A.BCH styles.

Biodegrade

If returning is unlikely (you're busy with a climate rally or living off the grid), the Reversible Quilt Vest is biodegradable as a last resort. After a long life of use, repair and re-use, simply remove the harness and cut the garment into smaller pieces and bury in your garden soil. It should biodegrade entirely within 4-8 weeks, depending on conditions.
