Description

New Edition – re-released by popular demand and now made to order from a premium Japanese Raw Denim + with updated sizing. Denim, like cookie dough, is best served raw. Un-washed and untreated to minimise industrial water usage, the signature shorts are a structured cut with a paper bag style waist, mock fly front and real (deep) pockets. Featuring contrast stitching and an A.16 label sitting proudly on the rear left.

Description

The A.16 is made to order, in-house at the A.BCH circular factory. Our entire production and HQ operations rely on 100% renewable wind power and we carbon offset our energy use. Your fabric is first laid and cut with minimal waste, pieces are then sewn by our team of skilled machinists. Each garment is trimmed for excess threads and pressed before being sent to you. Our operations are accredited by Ethical Clothing Australia.

Edition 2 (from 2021): 100% organically grown raw cotton denim (11.5oz) certified by European Union Organic Agriculture certifying body, Ecocert. The fibre is grown and spun in Egypt. The yarns were purchased in 2007 by our denim mill based in Okayama, Ibara, the heart of Japanese denim manufacturing. Due to slow adoption of organic yarns in local denim markets, this premium organic cotton has sat unused for several years. Upon purchase, the warp yarns are dyed and woven with undyed weft yarns on shuttle looms. We buy the finished raw denim from a Japanese textile wholesaler based in Osaka, which sources directly from the mills.

Edition 1 (2018-2020): 100% certified organic raw cotton denim (11.5oz). The fibre is grown, spun and yarn dyed in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra in India, where it’s certified by the Global Organic textile Standard (GOTS) to meet strict environmental, toxicity and social standards. The yarns are then delivered to GOTS certified mills in Gujarat. We buy the finished fabric from an Indian textile wholesaler based in Ahmedabad, which sources directly from the mills.

Description

100% Tencel Lyocell. Tencel Lyocell is made from eucalyptus tree pulp, which is FSC and Canopy verified. The fibre is created by Lenzing in Austria, which is then spun and dyed in Portugal. The thread is strong, durable and colourfast and is certified biodegradable in land and marine environments.

Description

Edition 2: 20% Recycled Cotton + 80% Cotton plain weave taffeta. The virgin cotton is grown in the USA, while the recycled content comes out of factory waste from Guatemala's denim mills. The two cottons are blended, spun and woven – they are completely undyed. We purchase and import the fabric directly from the mill in Guatemala who have been dedicated to creating beautiful undyed and recycled cottons since 1956. 

Edition 1: 100% GOTS Organic Cotton poplin. The organic cotton is grown, processed, spun and woven in Turkey. We import the fabric from a supplier based in the Netherlands who can sell it in smaller quantities to us.

Description

Non-synthetic elastic? Yeah, it's a thing. Made from natural rubber for stretch and un-dyed GOTS organic cotton in Austria, this elastic is strong and holds great shape over lots of wear and washes. Plus, it's totally compostable at the end of its life. We purchase this elastic from the supplier who invented the elastic and also packs and ships from their HQ in Germany.

100% recycled PET made in-house by a manufacturer with a passion for developing sustainable alternatives for brands. This is the only part of the garment that isn’t biodegradable. There's good news! In 2019 we developed a way to make these labels in organic cotton which feature in garments from A.31 onwards.

Description

100% organic cotton, printed with Oeko Tex 100 certified inks. The yarns are sourced in India from GOTS certified mills and are woven at our supplier-owned mill into tape. They are then whitened according to GOTS standards using oxygen based whiteners and digitally printed.

Compost

Our default packaging for local orders, home-compostable satchels have the lowest environmental impact when composted locally. Please don't throw this into your general waste bin, instead, after re-use, compost at home or find other solutions here. You can contact us immediately after placing your order to request recyclable packing instead.

Recycled

For extra fragile goods, or international orders, we use 100% post-consumer waste recycled and RECYCLABLE satchels, boxes and tissue paper. After re-use, these can go into your curb-side paper recycling bin. 

Care

Laundering

We don't recommend washing your raw denim goods unless you really need to. Spot cleaning is much better and will preserve colour while developing a unique patina.  If you must wash, machine wash on COLD and hang to dry. We'll also send a detailed digital care guide when you buy this garment.

Repairs

We stand by our garments + offer complimentary repairs for all A.BCH pieces. Our free repairs are for general wear and tear, all we ask is that you cover the cost of delivery or drop off to our Melbourne studio. Re-making or alterations can also be requested + will be individually quoted based on the time required.

End of Life

Recirculate

Help extend the life of the A.16 by sending or dropping it back to us for store credit – we'll even cover the shipping. Depending on its condition, we'll repair & re-sell it (as second hand), remake it into something or if it's no longer useful, we'll transform it into brand new yarns through our Recycling Program (so circular, darling).

Recycle

With removal of the elastic, the A.16 was specifically designed for easy mechanical or cellulose chemical recycling and this is our preferred afterlife pathway. Send or drop it back to us for store credit, we'll even cover the shipping. Once received and assessed, the garment is washed and prepared for mechanical recycling. The yarns we create from this process will become feedstock for future A.BCH styles.

Biodegrade

If returning is unlikely (you're busy with a climate rally or living off the grid), the A.16 is also biodegradable as a last resort. After a long life of use, repair and re-use, simply cut off the A.BCH A.16 tags (not biodegradable) then cut the garment into smaller pieces and bury in your garden soil - elastic and all. The A.16 should decompose in 8-12 weeks, depending on conditions. Note: the natural rubber in the elastic may take additional time to decompose.
